Idea #1: Old School, Side-Scrolling 'Beat-em-up'!

First idea I toyed with was a 2D, side-scrolling 'beat-em-up' (similar to the old Double Dragon/Gauntlet/X-Men: Children of the Atom games http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymei8s35XDs ), based in a universe with characters and stories I have been developing for a long time. The concept is pretty simple, move from left to right, beating up henchmen, gaining abilities, and taking down a big boss at the end. It would be 1-4 players (co-op rules!). Here are some pic/sketches of ideas for the game:

Charlie 'Cobalt' Simmons; Your average run-of-the mill, American hero. Primarily prefers to use his fists, but is also a skilled marksman and in a pinch will throw around some lead.

Cobalt would be one of the main characters players could select.

Sketches of potential henchmen:

Thugs/Agents/Aliens (boss)

Sketch of the alien/scientifically manufactured enemy/boss. I like the idea of leaving it a blank canvas, potentially giving it the ability to mimic player/character abilities and use it against them.

The setting/environment of the game would be on the streets of a city (yet to be named), so here are some reference images gathered (sketches/concepts will be drawn based on them). (Pulled from Google Images.)

Tons more ref images/sketches to come!
